Sir Charles Augustus Shelmadine was an autocrat. He ruled his village with a firm but kindly hand—instructing his tenants on their crops, their children and their love affairs. When he died and the new Squire came, the village stirred uneasily. For the new Squire had strange ideas—and even stranger friends—people like Mr. Mundford who never seemed to grow any older and whose
name was linked with the terrible Hell Fire Club. Mr. Mundford was interested in too many things that should not have concerned him... like the ruins of the old Roman temple where the rites of Mithras had once been enacted... and in the silent, amber-eyed young woman called Damask Greenaway.

Damask was the daughter of a Bible-thumping Christian. But when she lost the love of her life, she turned against all she had been raised to believe and a strange power possessed her; a power to make people do what she pleased. It was this power that Mr. Mundford was hoping to harness on that most powerful of nights All Hallow’s Eve.

Being familiar with Nora Lofts from her touching fictionalized biography of Katherine of Aragon, "The King's Pleasure," and her interesting retelling of the story of Anne Boleyn in "The Concubine," I was surprised to find something completely different in this work. Set in a much later time, this is an unusual tale of the mysterious goings on in the English countryside during the time of the land enclosure at the end of the 1700s. Lofts tells the story of a simple country maiden who takes a turn to the dark side following a romantic jilting. This plot line is shadowed by the sinister activities at the home of the baron of the manor who entertains a peculiar friend of suspect character and background. The backdrop to all is the pandemonium and misery caused to the common folk by the coming of the enclosure of their traditional family homesteads and meager subsistence plots of land. Faced with homelessness and starvation, they scramble to survive in a drastically changing world. I was entertained by the occult and metaphysical aspect of the story, although that was the weaker element of the work overall. What Lofts succeeds in brilliantly, however, is her depiction of the country people, their psychology, and in particular, their speech. She is able to evoke a very moving and realistic picture of what life was like for the very poor and the barely getting by. So much historical fiction focuses on the lives of royalty and battles between noble families that the lives of the vast majority of people living in those times are not as often highlighted. This book is well written and keeps you guessing, and happily the author is careful to bring everything to a particularly satisfying conclusion. Recommended

The Devil in Clevely edition by Norah Lofts Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I love Norah Lofts. Everyone has a stinker. Plot was not up to par.
This is another astoundingly good book by Norah Lofts. It's a fascinating, creepy story!
If you like Norah Lofts you'll love this book. Rich in historical detail and with a cast of memorable
characters, you will next want to read other works by this classic author. I only wish more of her books
were available as editions
Norah Lofts is my favorite author of all time. I thought I had all her books but found this one and she didn't let me down. Another great story tied into her familiar characters and the area around Baildon. Reading her stories is like going home to visit old friends.
I'm a huge fan of Norah Lofts. I've read most of her books, am re-reading some because the writing and the storylines are so good.
I've always been a huge NL fan; she writes beautifully and includes so much solid history in her works. I admire the way she follows a logical line with her characters, not forcing the contrived happy endings that pervade the current crop of "cozy small village" tales so popular today. I do wonder why these are so expensive though! I'd buy more of her work --for the fun of rereading them -- if offered them at a more reasonable price.
THIS BOOK IS MISSING THE LAST SCENE. I suppose it's likely that a new reader would never know it was missing. It's a closure scene, not plot finale. I have read and re-read many of Norah Lofts' books many times, and admire her thoroughness in every book. I

I discovered this with another of Norah Lofts' books, too. (The Scent of Cloves) It troubles me greatly that those who sell the versions don't publish the books as Lofts wrote them.
